If it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing. My brain refuses to work in anything other than hyperbole and my ego routinely writes checks that my body can’t cash.

For years I’ve been fantasizing about summiting mountains in far-off lands, taking on the icy tundras and photographing the world like Steve McCurry on assignment. Back in reality, however, the best I can do in a single day in Georgia is the CBT: The Coosa Backcountry Trail. A 12.7 mile loop that makes men out of boys, it’s usually talked about in hushed tones by those of us that haven’t actually braved the outdoors. And by us I mean Zohar and me.

Vogel State Park

It's on like Donkey Kong.

Zohar is the only friend I have that is both genuinely excited about hiking and willing to reach far above his physical fitness level for the sake of humor and chest-pounding rights. Full of bravado and low on practice, we traveled to Vogel State Park yesterday, determined to do the entire CBT in a single day.

We succeeded. Barely.

Checking into the visitor’s center, it was awkwardly obvious that we had no idea what we had actually signed up for. We had to register (which I admit, was kind of a turn-on), declare how much water, snacks, first aid we were carrying and whether we were willing to spend the night on the trail. They gave you a registration card you had to keep on your backpack, and a carbon-copy went in your car. In my mind we were tiny gods, and the nice people at the visitor’s center were both impressed and humbled by our hiking gumption. In my mind, we *had* to carry that registration so that they could easily identify the bodies. In reality, they were laying odds on how long before we had to call for help.

Water. Yep, we've got it covered.

After this, I don’t remember much…

The trail was brutal. There were no good places to rest and the heat made us sweat like Patrick Ewing on the fourth quarter. The sweat washed away the sunblock and bug repellent which in turn made us targets for all insects, critters, spiders and as-of-yet-unidentified worm-like creatures that we kept running into. There were hours of climbing and grades that would make the casual hiker (read, us) cry. Even though we had brought 8 liters of water with us, we were drinking it so fast that we had to start rationing it.

The truth is that we had no idea what we were doing. We could barely guess where we were on the map and between the dripping sweat and the constant folding and unfolding of the map it was quickly becoming one big, unreadable smudge. Nothing made sense. We spent hours guessing and there were stretches where we seriously doubted if we were even on the right trail.

I do remember that at one point I had the brilliant idea of running downhill, only to hit a small rock and find myself hurtling through the air and scraping my knees, elbows, hands and stomach.

I was bleeding and everything hurt. I had the foresight to pack Neosporin and bandages but it never occurred to me I might need alcohol or peroxide and perhaps some gauze or a small towel. Next time you want to laugh uncontrollably, try to wash multiple wounds with bottled water, your shirt and some toilet paper while you’re covered in dirt and gravel. I was bleeding and everything hurt, but I managed to muster up whatever remaining dignity I had left and soldier on.

Then we reached Wolfpen Gap to find bikers hanging out and giving me quizzical looks.

Are you OK?, they asked.

Yes, I’m fine!

Turns out that all you remaining dignity is gone when you’re covered in Georgia red clay, shirt stained with blood and other unidentified substances, completely drenched in sweat and you’re cut, bruised, bumped and scraped and still bleeding.

It had been over five hours at this point, and the worst climb was still ahead. A short stretch that nevertheless had the steepest grade of the trail. I’m exhausted, wounded and I have to do the most strenuous climb yet. Who puts the nastiest stretch of climbing towards the end of the hike? What are we, masochists?

I remember that there were several occasions when I told Zohar I couldn’t do it, it was just too much. I wanted to give up. But what are your options, really? Huffing and puffing, swearing like a sailor and telling myself that I was never doing this again, we managed to find Slaughter Mountain, the last peak.

It was all downhill from there. Well over an hour of downhill, but at least it was downhill.

Seven and a half hours after we had started we walked back into the visitor’s center. We were done.

We thought that there would be some kind of ceremony when you check out. Balloons, confetti, some kind of reception or congratulatory committee. Maybe a merit badge that I can sew on my shirt. A sticker? A gold star? A certificate of authenticity? Nope.

It was the most anticlimactic end to the most rewarding hike I’ve ever had. You just tell them you’re back, and they say “OK.”

We washed off in the public bathroom. Scraping more dirt and red clay and salt crystals from your sweat. I always forget to bring a change of clothes.

It would still be two hours before I got home, plenty of time to think about what I had done.

To the casual observer, I had accomplished nothing, having started off and finished at the same place. But I was no longer a child. I had developed that cold, steely glare that had made Bruce Willis’ career and my calves felt like they were chiseled out of granite. I wanted to drink Scotch, smoke a pipe and tell a group of travelers my story by a fireplace like some weathered British raconteur. I wanted to put on a generous helping of Aqua Velva.

I had become a man.
